It's deep stuff, but well worth the effort. At least once a year I pull out the book and skim through it. It's my opinion that "The Advancing Guitarist" is the most important of all the guitar books ever written. Goodrick deals more with concepts than methods

I found this book to really have things which you could apply to pretty much any style you would want to play, even though it is written by a jazz guitar player. I started reading it today and made it to page 12, the 'Activities - Application' portion. This is not a book for an absolute beginner, although it would put you on a great path. Paperbackpages. A visual overhaul would spruce up the feel of the book and make it a tad more friendly.

Due to the almost philosophical approach it will force you to develop your own way of working with the material. This is not an easy read, nor can I say it is a particularly satisfying one.
It's ok to be critical, but rude posts as well as SPAM get deleted. The essays at the back are indispensable, as philosophical treatise's more than just advanclng. No trivia or quizzes yet. Maybe just start by getting familiar with the modes. More than enough to keep you busy for a lifetime.

The Advancing Guitarist: Applying Guitar Concepts & Techniques by Mick Goodrick
It's inspired me to think of the unitar approach again. It does not try to convert you to a certain view or push some special playing technique or gimmick. The book is peppered with random bits of philosophy that are every bit as intriguing and sometimes downright bizarre as the musical ideas.
